Milan’s two biggest clubs are set to clash in the Champions League semi-finals, marking the first time in two decades that they meet at this stage, aiming to secure a spot in the final of Europe’s most prestigious club competition.
In the previous round, the fierce rivals eliminated Napoli and Benfica, respectively, setting the stage for the highly anticipated derby at San Siro.
On the domestic front, Inter Milan currently holds fourth place in the standings with 63 points, narrowly edging out AC Milan by a two-point margin in fifth position.
The last encounter between these two sides in the Champions League was back in 2005, during the quarter-finals. However, the match ended on a sour note as the second leg had to be abandoned due to Inter fans launching flares onto the San Siro pitch, with their team trailing in the tie.
Both teams now seek to leave behind that infamous history of the Milan Derby in European competitions. With a combined total of 10 Champions League titles between them, they rekindle their rivalry on the continent this Tuesday.
AC Milan Team News:
AC Milan faces a significant dilemma ahead of Tuesday’s match, as they anxiously await the fitness assessment of forward Rafael Leao.
Manager Stefano Pioli revealed that a late decision would be made regarding Rafael Leao’s involvement in Wednesday’s clash, following a muscle injury sustained by the Portuguese winger.
Leao has been a pivotal player for Milan this season, contributing 13 goals and 10 assists across all competitions. However, he was forced to exit Saturday’s 2-0 victory over Lazio after only 12 minutes due to the injury.
Inter Milan Team News:
Inter Milan manager Simone Inzaghi emphasized the magnitude of the upcoming match, recognizing it as the most significant encounter between the two sides in approximately 20 years.
“This is not just a derby, it is the derby,” Inzaghi expressed to reporters.
“We understand its importance for us, the club, our supporters, and myself. However, I am feeling composed because I have noticed the team’s unwavering focus,” he added.
“We must apply our intelligence and display determination. I have no doubts regarding our determination, and we need to utilize our intelligence wisely since this tie is decided over 180 minutes.”
There are doubts surrounding the availability of full-back Robin Gosens for Inter Milan, as he has been sidelined recently due to a dislocated shoulder. Nevertheless, the 28-year-old shared on Instagram on Monday that he is “back on track” and fully fit again, “just in time for the big match on Wednesday.”
