The Nigerian Labour Congress (NLC) is strongly opposing the demolition actions led by Federal Capital Territory Minister, Nyesom Wike, in Abuja. NLC President, Comrade Joe Ajaero, likened these demolitions, primarily impacting the poor, to oppressive tactics akin to Hitler’s regime.
During an interview on AIT, Comrade Ajaero expressed his concerns, stating, “Shelter is a basic human need, and demolishing homes, some of which people started with their retirement savings, is unacceptable. The so-called master plan seems elusive, and this indiscriminate demolition must stop.”
Comrade Ajaero also alleged that Nigeria’s political elite is waging a war on the impoverished population, emphasizing that the poor are suffering immensely. He criticized the lack of government support for essential services like transportation, water, electricity, and healthcare, even when contributions from workers for housing programs are being misappropriated.
In response to the demolitions, particularly affecting the working class in Abuja, the NLC president vowed to take action to halt these actions allegedly orchestrated by Wike.
