During the 2023 Igbo Day Celebration, organized by Ohaneze Ndigbo Worldwide and hosted by Governor Peter Mbah of Enugu State, South-East leaders and governors reiterated their plea for the release of Mazi Nnamdi Kanu, the leader of the proscribed Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), aiming to alleviate security challenges in the region.
“It pains me so much when my children are killed on a daily basis,” said Chief Emmanuel Iwuanyanwu, the President General of Ohaneze Worldwide, who emphasized the connection between Kanu’s detention and the region’s security issues.
“I hereby once again, on behalf of Ohanaeze Ndigbo worldwide, appeal to the FG to release Mazi Nnamdi Kanu, more so, when a court of competent jurisdiction in Nigeria had declared him innocent.”
In his opening remark, Arthur Eze, CEO of Atlas Oranto Petroleum Limited, stressed the need for constructive engagement with the Federal Government regarding Kanu’s release. He mentioned, “Based on this, no number of meetings with the FG or political consultations on the matter will be too much.”
Governor Francis Nwifuru of Ebonyi State underlined the importance of unity among Igbos and their collective efforts to secure Kanu’s release and develop the region.
“I am of the view that long-lasting results can be achieved through round table discussions, strong undivided leadership, and an organized political structure,” added Eze.
Governor Peter Mbah of Enugu State expressed the significance of unity among South-East states and substantial investments in the region’s development.
“Our future is in Nigeria, Africa, and the world, and an itinerary tribe shouldn’t be an intolerable nation,” noted Governor Charles Soludo of Anambra State.
The event also featured state-by-state dances and the presentation of honors to past Igbo heroes.
