Bola Tinubu, although facing legal challenges to his legitimacy as Nigeria’s president, is already being considered for a second term by his party, the All Progressives Congress (APC), in the 2027 elections.
Recently elected as president, Tinubu emerged victorious in a closely contested and controversial election, surpassing Atiku Abubakar of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Peter Obi of the Labour Party (LP), and 15 other candidates.
Atiku, who came in second, and Obi, who came in third, have contested Tinubu’s victory and claimed that they should have won the election instead. Verdicts from the presidential election petition tribunal are expected in the coming weeks.
However, the chairman of the APC, Abdullahi Adamu, stated during a televised interview on July 12, 2023, that the party is already making preparations for Tinubu’s re-election.
“We will, by the grace of God, start planning and hope we can secure another term for President Tinubu,” he expressed during the Arise TV interview that morning.
Adamu, a former governor of Nasarawa, also dismissed reports of a rift between him and the president. Although he publicly supported former Senate President Ahmad Lawan for the party’s presidential ticket in the previous year’s primary election, Tinubu emerged as the winner.
Speculations arose about discord between the two men, but Adamu clarified on Wednesday that he has been on good terms with the president since Tinubu secured the party’s ticket at the convention.
Adamu further emphasized that the party is actively working to address concerns within various groups and resolve internal issues.
“As human beings, we acknowledge our imperfections. Therefore, we will rectify our mistakes and reconcile genuine differences among us,” stated the former senator.
