The Anambra State Ministry of Women and Social Welfare has stepped in to address the concerning case of a widow whose in-laws intended to bury her late husband in a forest.
Mrs. Amarachi Anakor brought the matter to the attention of Commissioner Mrs. Ify Obinabo, alleging that her late husband’s father and brother were refusing to allow her to bury him in their compound.
“I’m a native of Ifitedunu in Dunukofia Local Government Area, and my late husband, Chike Anakor, is from Umunya in Oyi Local Government Area. My in-laws told me that my husband was stripped of his rights when he was alive, hence he will not be buried in the compound,” she explained.
Commissioner Obinabo convened a meeting with the families and kinsmen after the widow reported the issue. The Anakor family was given seven days to set a burial date, but Vincent Anakor, their representative, disagreed.
The Ministry, supported by kinsmen from Umuosegbu kindred in Ajakpani, Umunya, has scheduled the burial for Friday, Nov. 10.
Obinabo emphasized that Governor Chukwuma Soludo’s administration has zero tolerance for inhumane acts and injustice against women, urging all parties to embrace peace and ensure a proper burial for the deceased.
