Delta State University, Abraka, held its convocation ceremony on Saturday, with Valentine Ohaegbunem emerging as one of the standout graduates. A First Class degree holder in History and International Relations, Ohaegbunem was also named the best graduating student in his department, drawing admiration from faculty, guests, and fellow students for his academic excellence and resilience.
Speaking on the milestone, his elder brother, Alex Ohaegbunem, extended heartfelt congratulations to Valentine, describing his achievement as “a powerful reminder that nothing—not even the loss of both parents—can stop a determined mind when the right support system is in place.”
But beyond the emotional and intellectual triumphs, Alex used the moment to shine a spotlight on the man he credits with transforming not only Valentine’s future, but the lives of countless young people across Nigeria—Senator Ned Munir Nwoko.
“We lost our parents early in life, and it was one of the darkest moments for us as a family, but in those trying times, Senator Ned Nwoko stepped in like a father. He believed in our potential and backed that belief with tangible support—financial, emotional, and moral. Today, my brother is graduating with First Class Honours and leading his department because someone chose to care when it mattered most”, Alex shared.
According to Alex, the Senator’s generosity is neither random nor restricted to those close to him. “Yes, we are family, but Senator Ned Nwoko’s kindness doesn’t end with family. What many don’t know is that he currently sponsors hundreds of students across Nigerian universities, and even abroad. Some are total strangers to him. He doesn’t do it for praise. He does it because he understands what education means in lifting people out of poverty and preparing them for national relevance.”
“Today is a celebration of Valentine, but it’s also a celebration of every hand that held him up along the way. And at the forefront of that list is my uncle, Senator Ned Nwoko. I deeply appreciate him for all he does—not just for us, but for so many others who may never have the chance to say it out loud. You are changing lives quietly and powerfully.”
Alex further noted that Valentine’s convocation is not just a personal win for the Ohaegbunem family, but a shining testament to what can happen when potential meets opportunity.
