The pedestrian bridge located at the 7-Up Bus Stop on the Lagos end of the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway is currently causing apprehension among pedestrians due to the alarming absence of a significant portion of its railings, as reported by PUNCH Metro.
During a recent visit to the bridge, it was evident that many pedestrians were using it with a sense of unease.
It is worth noting that when approaching the bridge from the Ojodu Berger area towards Lagos, its poor condition is not immediately apparent, as it is partially concealed by an advertising banner.
However, when approaching the bridge from the Oworonshoki direction towards Berger, the deteriorating state of the bridge becomes unmistakable.
According to Punch, several pedestrians expressed their concern about the bridge’s condition and called on the Lagos State Government to take action and repair it.
One pedestrian, Ayomide Daniel, remarked,
“I was passing by and I saw that some of the railings used to cover the bridge have been removed, and they need to be replaced by the government. They should please help us so that this will not cause disaster. Someone can mistakenly slip onto the road from the bridge. The government should come here and see this and help us repair the bridge.”
Another pedestrian, Omolola Pelumi, described the current condition of the bridge as potentially life-threatening, saying,
“This bridge is very dangerous as it is. It is very bad and life-threatening. The government should do the needful. Some persons might have committed this act of removing the railings. As an adult, I am very careful, especially when I pass here with my kids. Children can be very playful. What if someone mistakenly slips off the bridge? 7-Up Bridge needs urgent attention.”
A tricyclist, Akeem Onabisi, also voiced his concerns about the bridge’s condition, stating,
“Whenever I get to the bridge, I apply more caution. We expect the government or anyone concerned to help us fix it.”
In response, Gboyega Akosile, the Chief Press Secretary to Governor Sanwo-Olu, expressed concern about the disappearance of the bridge’s railings, attributing it to an act of vandalism. He assured that the Ministry of Works would assess the damage and undertake the necessary repairs, saying,
“How can rails disappear? Probably some people have gone to tamper with the railings. I will inform the works department to go and check.”
