In a significant development on Sunday, November 26, President Joe Biden announced the release of a four-year-old American girl, Abigail Edan, who had been held by Hamas in Gaza since the October 7 raid into southern Israel.
The release coincided with Hamas handing over 13 Israeli hostages, three Thais, and one individual with Russian citizenship, marking the third day of the truce with Israel.
This reciprocal release is part of the ongoing efforts to resolve the hostage situation, Israel is expected to release 39 Palestinian prisoners in response, said Biden.
Expressing his hope for a prolonged pause in hostilities, President Biden emphasized the importance of continuing releases of prisoners.
He specifically mentioned his desire for more Americans held by Hamas to be freed, acknowledging the unimaginable ordeal Abigail Edan had endured after witnessing her parents being killed during the October 7 raid.
“What she endured is unthinkable,” Biden stated at a news conference in the U.S.
The four-day truce, the first in seven weeks, offers a temporary respite from the conflict. On October 7, Hamas killed 1,200 people and took about 240 hostages back into Gaza, while Israel, in response, vowed to destroy the Hamas militants in Gaza, highlighted the President.
The ensuing Israeli response included bombardments and a ground offensive in the north, resulting in substantial Palestinian casualties and displacements, with reports indicating that 14,800 Palestinians have been killed, and hundreds of thousands have been displaced.
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, during a meeting with security forces in the Gaza Strip, indicated that the campaign is far from over.
“Nothing will stop us, and we are convinced that we have the strength, the power, the will, and the determination to achieve all the goals of the war, and that is what we will do,” he declared.
The mediation efforts of Egypt and Qatar played a crucial role in maintaining the truce, providing a diplomatic avenue for dialogue between the conflicting parties.
