Pandemonium ensued on Saturday during the commencement of the 7th National Youth Games (NYG) in Asaba, the Delta State capital, as a gate leading to the main bowl of the Stephen Keshi Stadium unexpectedly collapsed, injuring a middle-aged woman believed to be one of the athletes.
The injured individual was swiftly transported in an ambulance to an undisclosed medical facility within the city, as reported by SaharaReporters.
Eyewitnesses on the scene noted that the victim’s condition exceeded the capabilities of the medical personnel at the stadium’s clinic, which had been set up for the ongoing National Youth Games.
In the lead-up to the National Youth Games in Asaba, Delta State, athletes from the state who were camped for the event expressed their grievances.
They protested against what they perceived as “inadequate feeding conditions, unreliable water and electricity supply, and unsanitary living conditions” at their camp.
These young athletes, ranging in age from 10 to 20, accused Tonobok Okowa, the chairman of the state Sports Commission, and commission officials of prioritizing personal gain over their well-being.
They specifically cited concerns about the quality of food, access to clean water, and consistent electricity supply at their camp.
Furthermore, the athletes leveled accusations against Tonobok Okowa, who is the younger brother of the immediate past governor of the state, Ifeanyi Okowa, and Festus Owhojero, the director of the Audit department.
They alleged that these individuals were involved in awarding contracts for cooking services in the athletes’ camps and supplying other consumable items to their sisters, wives, relatives, and girlfriends.
