A 24-year-old woman has been apprehended by the police in Osun for allegedly impersonating a police officer in order to rob Point of Sale (POS) operators in Osogbo. According to SP Yemisi Opalola, the police spokesperson in the state, the suspect was rescued from an angry mob on Tuesday and subsequently arrested.
“Yesterday, the police rescued a 24-year-old woman from a mob that intended to lynch her for alleged theft,” stated Opalola. “She was taken to the Ata-Oja Police Division in Osogbo. During the interrogation, it was revealed that in April, the suspect visited a PoS booth and posed as a police officer from the Ata-Oja Police Division. She apprehended the salesgirl, confiscated her bag containing a PoS machine, N20,000 in cash, and a mobile phone worth N15,000.”
Opalola continued, “While on their way to the Ata-Oja Police Divisional headquarters, the suspect tricked her victim into making a photocopy of a document, but then she fled with the confiscated bag. When the suspect was apprehended on Tuesday, we recovered N246,650 in cash, an Opay PoS machine worth N30,000, an android phone, an Ekiti State University identity card, and a voter card from her. Additionally, two PoS business record books and an itel phone without a battery, suspected to belong to another victim, were found in her possession.”
Furthermore, Opalola mentioned that further investigation revealed that the suspect had already transferred N100,000 from the recovered PoS machine to an account in a commercial bank.
