Speaker of the House of Representatives, Tajudeen Abbas, announced on Saturday in Zaria that the 10th assembly would be reevaluating a bill proposing constitutional roles for traditional rulers.
During a respectful visit to the Emir of Zazzau, Malam Ahmed Bamalli, the speaker expressed his purpose of seeking royal blessings, guidance, and prayers from the esteemed royal father. He also conveyed gratitude for the support and prayers received from his constituency and fellow Nigerians.
Tajuddeen, accompanied by several members and leaders of the house, explained that they were also present to seek advice from the traditional rulers. He assured the emir that the assembly would be revisiting the recommendations put forth by the traditional rulers seeking constitutional roles, with the aim of ensuring the bill’s successful passage.
In response, the emir emphasized the significant developmental roles played by traditional rulers in pre-independent and post-independent Nigeria, asserting that their contributions cannot be overstated. He expressed dismay at some politicians opposing the bill, suggesting that it would create another tier of government, which he believed was untrue.
The emir revealed that an extensive deliberation on the issue had taken place in Kaduna under the leadership of the Sultan of Sokoto. A committee, led by the Emir of Lafia, Nasarawa State, a former Justice of the Supreme Court, drafted the bill, which unfortunately did not pass the National Assembly.
Appealing to the 10th assembly, the emir urged them to revisit the bill and ensure its speedy passage, highlighting its potential to enhance security, growth, and national development.
Following the courtesy visit, the speaker engaged in an interactive session with the people of Zaria Federal Constituency, further strengthening the connection between the representatives and their constituents.
